Hi! I am Cryptopunk #7271 and would like to share my thoughts and opinions on all these avatar projects! I have some background information about myself on my pinned tweet (@daniel100eth).
There has been a surge in the generative profile pic (pfp) niche in the last two months ever since Bored Ape Yacht Club. It seems like every day multiple new projects are launching, I can think of at least 40 different pfp projects. I will be ranking my top choices, doing some analysis, and linking their social media accounts! From day one I have been wanting to provide value to all those who follow me. I finally can. This is my first article but I plan to do many more and have already found an organization to write for. This will be very in-depth in terms of the number of projects I will be mentioning and dissecting (not all of them are 10,000 or avatar projects). One last thing before we get started, I will always be upfront with my followers about what I own and what I do not own.
Cryptopunks: The most historically significant NFT in my opinion. When I learned about NFTs less than three months ago and learned about Cryptopunks I thought they were a complete joke. Spending thousands to millions of dollars on pixels…. how odd, I couldn’t wrap my head around spending so much money on one. As I did more research I realized they are not a PFP but rather a collectible, it is the best bet in the NFT space, if you’re bullish on NFTs you’re bullish on Punks. I eventually was fortunate enough to buy a Punk from flipping, I spent $45,000 on Cryptopunk #7271 because I think the possibilities are endless. Personally not the biggest fan of Larva Labs, I strongly believe a team like BAYC would do wonders for Punks but I also understand not wanting to change a historical collection. Cryptopunks will always be king, always will be the number one “avatar” and collectible.
Bored Ape Yacht Club: I wanted this to be my first NFT purchase, it was the night of minting and my first NFT was NBA Topshot so I had no clue how to work a Metamask or what a seed phrase was, or how Opensea works. I was lost and had no one to help, so I missed out. The art is celebrated and love, the team is smart and provides value, floor hit almost 8eth two months after minting at .08eth. The Bored Ape Kennel Club airdrop was huge for the project and really solidified its longevity in the space, I think this project is really the only avatar here to stay for the long haul. Once we enter a bear market, I think two main projects will survive; Cryptopunks and Apes. In terms of volume, the Bored Ape Club has consistently stayed on top in terms of eth volume. There have also been some massive sales ranging from 50-100eth! The floor is 6.9eth as of today and they have one of the best holder distributions at a little 48%. I flipped in and out of apes but currently do not have one, I aim to get one eventually though!
Gutter Cat Gang: I think the Gutter Cats are hanging in third place in terms of avatar projects. There are only 3,000 of them and almost 1,400 holders giving it a great holder distribution. The art is similar to BAYC in my opinion but they have solidified their place in the market, I think largely because of the team. The team has been pushing and working hard to provide value from 3D Metaverse avatars to airdrops to a comic! I place a lot of value on teams, the lethal combination is when both the team is amazing and the art is killer. Overall, I think as apes move up, more money will flow into Gutter Cats as they are the next best option. The volume is decent but nothing crazy and the floor has been quite volatile the past two weeks. They pride themselves on the unique community they built up, so if you haven’t already, check their discord out! (I did flip but do not own any at the moment).
Art Blocks: Art Blocks is a bit complex and @zeneca_33 explains it perfectly in this article. Essentially it is a large-scale generative artwork platform that features lots of different artists. I will not be able to explain it better than Zeneca so most definitely check out his article! I think the recent boom in the art blocks market was unwarranted but at the same time, I believe lots of the pieces are undervalued for the long term and we can see lots of smart money rotating away from avatar projects into Art Blocks! (I flipped, currently do not own any but do plan on buying some shortly)
GOATZ: Where do I start, this is a fairly new project, launched on July 8th at a .05 mint price. There were about 1,600 minters and now there are over 2,500 unique wallets. Many think this is just another copycat project of the BAYC, I strongly disagree when people say this. There are so many cool things going on under the hood, from the sandbox houses to the forge to all the game theory attached. The forge allows you to put two Goatz in and pick your favorite traits from each Goat and create your dream avatar while the parents are burned. The forge is planned to launch in the 1st week of August. The team is not anonymous and has done plenty of interviews which is super awesome, hearing Dez speak about the project always makes me so bullish. The market skyrocketed the day after mint to .18 but came back down to .09 and has stayed steady there. Once the forge opens and supply dwindles, the unique ownership % will rise drastically and so will the floor. Full Disclosure: I minted 80, bought 105 on the secondary, at some point, I had 185, but at the time of writing this I have 100.
Veefriends: This is not your run-of-the-mill generative art project, it’s Gary Vee’s doodles backed by plenty of utility. There are a little over 10,000 tokens with different rarities, each token is a ticket into Veecon for the next three years. Gary wants to create a brand out of these, he wants to be the next Disney. I see Veefriend’s like a bet on Gary Vee, that is the selling point. The floor has risen dramatically since launch but is now sitting at 4.3eth with over 4,500 holders. I think this project is still in its infancy and if you have the eth I would look into it more. Another huge selling point is the community, Gary brought in lots of outsiders into his project from launch and I think this will help support the project in the long term. (I sold mine for my punk but would like to get back in eventually).
Cool Cats: As I am typing this I am filled with disappointment in myself. Where do I start… I minted 3 of them at .06, they were minting quite slow but I liked the team and how they talked in the discord, and eventually Cole and I as well as some other members pushed for a .02 mint price, within 48 hours of minting I had 118 Cool Cats. I sold most of them way too early, around 0.10 eth, which pains me now but profit is profit and that is something we should all appreciate. Anywho, I am currently Cool Cat less but the project has taken off and has established itself as a formidable competitor with other projects. The volume has been off the charts, the number of unique wallets has grown daily (3,300 now), the floor is currently sitting at 0.84eth and it’s been about 20 days since the launch. The team has been transparent and communicative, they’ve released a cool roadmap and have already done a couple of airdrops I believe. I think by now most people have heard of this project but my favorite thing is how positive and established the art is. The Cool Cat character has been built for years and just radiates good vibes and that’s something lots of projects are missing!
Lonely Alien Space Club: I have had some mixed feelings about this project but they launched a few days ago and took over 60 hours to sell out. I am going, to be honest, at first, I wasn’t a huge fan of the art or the discord community and even posted that on my Twitter, but the art was growing on me by the hour (now one of my favorite projects in terms of art) and the discord community was super chill and welcoming the second time around. However, after I spent a few hours in the discord my mind was changed and I minted 100 of them. They were on the pricer side of the new projects at .06 and it is a 10,000 collection. But I love the roadmap, the community is chill, the art is fantastic and the team is one of my favorites so far. On top of all this, the roadmap is great and achievable, unlike some projects…. overall I think people are sleeping on this one. The floor as of right now is .04eth and there are over 1,500 holders. (One more thing… I have an interview on the way with the team!)
The Wicked Craniums: These did really good on the mint day, sold out in 30 minutes, and were hyped up, floor rocketed that same day. I minted 40 and sold them within 24 hours. I did not keep up with them after but I heard they have built a special community with trivia nights and movie nights! There are close to 3,300 unique holders and the floor almost doubled today upon on announcement of an airdrop of pets. The team seems very smart and determined to make it one of the projects that succeed, so if you wrote it off, I would recommend going back and looking into it. (I would also like to get one :0)
Fame Lady Squad: The Fame Lady Squad is the first all-female pfp collection, they released 8,888 of them at .05eth. I missed out on minting, but it’s also led by a female team which is something that is needed, there needs to be diversity in this space and the Fame Lady Squad promotes diversity. The art is cool as well, the floor has risen above mint (currently sitting at 0.13eth) with over 2,500 holders. Gary Vee promoted it which pushed the price up as he did with Deadheads. The roadmap is cool and a few things caught my eye; the charitable donations and the free merch for the most active members of the community. I have not been in their discord. If you believe in female representation in the NFT space, I would highly recommend doing some research into this one!
Bulls on the Block: This is definitely an interesting project, they had a rough launch mainly because of the insane gas fees, then we saw them moon before rapidly falling back to just above the mint price. The art is original and cool but also very “messy” a lot is going on in each picture. The team also seems determined to make the project succeed and their biggest selling point was a community wallet which they loaded with 90eth and let the community vote and decided what to do with it. It is an interesting experiment. One thing I disliked is how many rare traits there are but overall the floor has stabilized at 0.16eth which is double the mint and has 2,880 unique holders! (I do not own any)
Deadheads: A collectible and digital animated series. First off, I thought the art was really cool from the moment I saw it. It was unique and original and 3d, what more can you ask for. Upon reveal, the floor ones were quite ugly but I still think they’re cool, and the team has some big plans. The floor is at 0.15eth and there are almost 3,000 holders. If the project executes on the roadmap, there is no ceiling. Hit an all-time high pre-reveal at 0.35eth so getting in now for the long term may be worth it.
Sup Ducks: This project has been on a rollercoaster since its launch, it launched at 0.1eth per duck to ten ducks for 0.7eth. The art was very different and at first, I thought it was quite a steep price but the art has also grown on me and they have expanded their unique holders very rapidly even with all the conspiracy theories. There was a conspiracy that it was being pumped by a certain group of people as well as Faze Banks, I do think there was some foul play by a group of people but who knows who was involved. Overall, I think they’re laying quite the foundation and building a unique community from the ground up. Volume has been off the charts since they sold out and right now the floor is sitting at 0.19eth and they have just under 1,900 holders. The unique art and the team’s experience in crypto is the main selling point.
The Visitors of Imma Degen: I am personally not a fan of the art, it kind of creeps me out, to be honest. But there are quite a few people that really like the art, the minted at .08 and now the floor is at 0.1eth. At first, the floor went below mint but now it’s holding steady and the holders are waiting for the team to execute. The team has some interesting roadmap points, they are planning to release 3d fully rigged avatars and create short films featuring different Voids as well as competitions and community events. There are close to 2,000 holders at this point. (I minted a few and sold for profit)
Untamed Elephants: These elephants started minting on July 3rd and they took a while to sell out. Mint price was 0.03 and at the moment the floor is at 0.045eth, there are 2,040 holders and 7,500 elephants. They have already initiated a donation of $50,000 to the Elephant Crisis Fund and plan to donate a portion of the future royalties as well. The team is communicative and wants to make the project succeed. They also plan to airdrop each elephant a companion and then give holders an option to merge the two nfts into a brand new one housed under a third collection (one for the elephants, one for the companion, and one for the merged). If you’re looking for a promising, charitable, and smart project look no further! (I do hold one elephant)
Crypto Hodlers: Launched 4 days ago at 0.04eth mint price with the whole concept of rewarding those who hold. They were struggling to sell out but when Pranksy endorsed them publicly on Twitter they sold out in less than 40 minutes. As of right now, the floor is 0.064eth with almost 1,600 holders. The only “issue” is that the top three holders, hold over 23% of the total supply. They added diversity as there are about the same number of males as females! They are building out a naming feature, and this coming from their site “We have plans to incentivize hodling Hodlers using OpenSea Royalties, stay tuned..”. (I minted some and flipped, currently do not own any).
Mad Cat Militia: Mad Cat Militia was extremely hyped up but when it came to drop day they did not have a smooth launch or sell-out. I believe it took a few days for them to sell out and they had lots of issues with metadata. The team is in it for the long term and create games. I think it’s still in its infancy but it is not quite my type of project. I would take a look at the roadmap, but this is definitely not a quick flip.
There are lots of projects out there and I did not cover all of them, I have 24 left on my list that I did not mention in this article. At the moment, I do not believe any are worth mentioning but I will post the list at the bottom in numerical order but they are not ranked and some of them are failing so make sure to do your own research. Feel free to direct message me on Twitter with any questions and remember this is just my opinion!
I plan on writing lots more covering all sorts of subjects in this space mainly aimed at beginners! I am excited to be able to contribute to the NFT space and hope to provide value to everyone who spends time reading my tweets and articles. Lastly, I have created a separate wallet in which I aim to receive ETH contributions and will use on 1/1 works to support budding and thriving artists alike. Basically, I created a wallet for donations/tips in which 100% of revenue will go back into the NFT space aimed at buying smaller artist’s works and it will all be trackable via wallet address! This is the wallet address if you’re interested in helping support smaller artists! Thank you for reading! 0x0bb7bF1B64f79641f039184D51e3c65ADBf63a40
Some thoughts on polymorphs would be great too. Thanks
